Back on the 11th of May 2007 Mike McCauley, a close friend from High School, tied the knot with Lindsay. Mike’s a fellow wine buff and was fortunate enough to spend a week with the winemaker at Cain Vineyards in Napa a few years back. Naturally he made many wonderful vinous discoveries, including a bottle of Pinot Meunier from Domaine Chandon. I step into the picture because I was one of Mike’s groomsmen and we all received a bottle of Domaine Chandon Pinot Meunier as a groom’s gift. The Pinot Meunier is Mike’s favorite pure enjoyment casual drinking bottle. I took the pleasure in finally uncorking this bottle a day after Christmas on December 26th 2008.
2005 Pinot Meunier, Domaine Chandon
Appellation: Carneros, Napa Valley, California
Le Service: Bottle aerated for one hour, drank with my Riedel Vinum Extreme Bordeaux glass
Tasting notes: A burgundy brownish red hue in the glass with fruity aromas of blackberry, plum, cassis, spice, pomegranate and black pepper, followed by subtle notes of violets, earth and yeast. This wine is dry with light acidity, light tannins, a medium body and a silky texture. There are flavors of blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate, coffee, and grapefruit peel. This is a great fruity sipping wine that is not too overbearing in any area. No need for food. 14.5% vol.
Pairing: Although this wine does not call for food, I accompanied the bottle with a brisket slow roasted in Marsala sauce and a Honey-glazed ham sandwich. The brisket did not pair too well as it brought out even more of the bitterness in the wine. However, the honey-glazed ham paired quite well, smoothing out the wine perfectly.
Anecdote: Before the tasting I completed a little wine experiment. I compiled my own personal Nez du Vin of 53 wine aromas individually packed in Ziplock baggies. All compliments of my Mom’s kitchen, my Dad’s office, and the Galloway back yard. I carefully smelled and tasted everything with the idea of further honing my olfactory and palate. Here’s the nosedown… molasses, cinnamon, butter, dark chocolate, black pepper, cranberry, mint, dried cassis, thyme, tea, orange, anise, nutmeg, bread, strawberry preserves, potato peel, raw dough, apricot preserves, dry dates, graphite, vanilla, Maraschino cherries, caramel, soy sauce, fig preserves, Clementine peel, sage, white pepper, lime peel, almonds, extinguished matches, dried apricots, red apple, Clementine, coffee, charcoal, honey, raisin, toast, apple peel, clove, pine nuts, ginger, lime, dried blueberries, beets, banana, pecan, rosemary, wet rocks, pencil shavings, blackberry, orange peel.
