I visited Bodega Torres in Pacs del Penedès, Spain, in June of 2006. This excursion was part of my World Cup Soccer Euro Trip… 12 cities in 17 days, accompanied by Paco, Javier, David and Fede.
Here’s the whirlwind breakdown… Paris, Hannover, Hamburg, Munich, Venice, Amsterdam, Prague, Brussels, Bruges, Barcelona (including Sitges, Montserrat, Pacs del Penedès, Tossa del Mar)
For the culmination of my trip I broke off from the group and spent 3 days in and around Barcelona. On Day 2 I paid for a group package to Sitges, Montserrat and Bodega Torres. I took a 3-hour guided tour of the winery and vineyards, including a tasting at the end. This was pre Kenny’s Wine Journal but I do remember tasting the following labels — Más La Plana Penedès (approx. $50) and Gran Sangre de Toro Catalunya (approx. $15). The Más La Plana is the top bottling; however, I preferred the Gran Sangre de Toro from a value standpoint. Although as a quick anecdote, I was quite disappointed by the bottle of the Gran Sangre de Toro that I brought home and uncorked with Sarah.
The whole experience was very touristy for sure, nonetheless, I’d recommend the visit to anyone looking for a nice bang their buck and some pretty tasty wine to boot.
